How to Perform a Leak Detection Test

Leak Detection Test

Here are our leak detection instructions on how to check your meter to determine if you have one in your water system and, if you do, to isolate whether it is inside or outside your home.

This test should be conducted for a 30 minute period, during which time no water is being used on the property.

  • Find your water meter. Your meter is usually located in front of the house in a covered box near the street. In some neighborhoods it could be at the corner of block.
  • Get the numbers. Write down the numbers indicated on the meter at the start of this test.
  • Return to check the meter reading after 30 minutes have passed and re-check the numbers

* If the numbers have not changed, you do not have a leak in your water system.
* If the numbers have changed, continue with the following steps:

  1. Turn off the main shut off water valve for your home. It will generally be located in the garage or inside the home.
  2. Get the numbers. Write down the numbers indicated on the meter at the start of this test.
  3. Return to check the meter reading after 30 minutes have passed and re-check the numbers

* If the numbers have not changed after an additional 30 minutes on the second test, the leak will be located somewhere inside your home.
* If the numbers have changed after the second test, it is outside your home between the water meter and your main shut off valve.

Once you have confirmed a leak and whether it’s inside or outside your home, you will need to isolate its source. Since water damage can appear far away from the leak this isn’t always easy. At this point, we’d recommend contacting a professional company providing

leak detection services.
